Institute of Hospitality acquires Academy of Food & Wine Service and Hospitality & Leisure Manpower

The Institute of Hospitality has made two important acquisitions: The Academy of Food & Wine Service and Hospitality & Leisure Manpower.

 The Institute’s chief executive Peter Ducker FIH explains how these businesses will fit into the Institute’s strategic plans regarding customer service and productivity.

“For 30 years the Academy of Food & Wine Service has provided training programmes, offering a pathway to management for those working in front-of-house service. It has run some important industry competitions and provided support to its members as the professional body for front-of-house food & beverage service.”

“Given our increased focus on training and the development of our own online training using the Upskill People platform, this acquisition gives us a tremendous wealth of training material which will be of tremendous value to the industry, both in the UK and overseas.”

Hospitality and Leisure Manpower (HALM) is a national training, research and consulting group, founded and managed by David Battersby OBE FIH, a former president of the Institute of Hospitality and co-founder of the Gold Service Scholarship. HALM has developed algorithms to benchmark productivity in hospitality.

In 2001, with the British Hospitality Association, Battersby launched the ‘Profit Through Productivity’ programme with backing from the Government and key trade associations. ‘Profit Through Productivity’ provided regional workshops across the UK to help businesses increase their profits and efficiency.

Ducker adds: “Given the pressures of wage inflation and the concerns associated with recruiting and retaining talent, this acquisition will enable us to help members identify opportunities within their businesses, and will also give us a service of value to the industry at large, worldwide.”

 The two organisations were previously owned by the British Institute of Innkeeping.

Institute of Hospitality London Careers Fair matches New Talent with Top Employers

Over 250 job-seeking students and hospitality professionals made direct contact with more than 30 top-quality employers at the Institute of Hospitality London Careers Fair last week (Friday 19 May).

With student members at 34 UK colleges and universities, including Glion, University of Surrey, Westminster Kingsway College and University of Brighton, the Institute of Hospitality facilitated the match-making.

Mariya Kovacheva AIH, who graduates from the Edge Hotel School this year, said: “People from HR wanted to interact with us, see what attracted us to hospitality and ask about our future goals. They are going to offer us positions. It was very good and very useful.”

Paul McDonald, human resources business partner at Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, said: “What an uplifting day meeting new and exciting talent through the Institute of Hospitality. Thank you to all of those new connections whom expressed an interest in Shangri-La Hotel, At the Shard.”

Graham Copeland FIH MI, group hotel director at the Zetter Group, said: “I am delighted that we could showcase The Zetter Group’s amazing career opportunities to the talented students of the universities, colleges and hotel schools attending the Institute of Hospitality Careers Fair.”

The event was organised by Michael Voigt FIH, general manager of L’Oscar and Institute of Hospitality London Branch education officer. Ben Singer FIH, chair for the London Branch, Paul Evans FIH deputy dean of BPP University and student member Eleni Michael from the University of Surrey worked closely with Michael to put the event on.

Those in attendance heard expert careers advice from guest speakers Robert Nadler of Nadler Hotels, Michael Gray FIH MI, former GM of the Hyatt Regency, Jurgen Ammerstofer from The Edition London and Rak Kalidas of Levy Restaurants.

The event took place at the Institute of Directors on Pall Mall. Lunch and refreshments were generously sponsored by BaxterStorey. Planday, a provider of employee scheduling software, also sponsored the event.

 

New Apprenticeships and People 1st Consultation

People 1st Consultation

The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) recently consulted on the withdrawal of apprenticeship frameworks in April 2018. People 1st responded to their consultation and suggested that, where a framework is subject to review and there is a new and approved apprenticeship standard in place, that certain pathways should actually be withdrawn earlier.

People 1st is now running a consultation on this topic. The final decision on withdrawal dates will reflect the outcome of the consultation, so People 1st wants to ensure that employers have had their say. Employers are invited to take part in the short survey by 8 June.

 

University of Greenwich becomes the latest learning provider to join the Institute of Hospitality

Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism students at the University of Greenwich now qualify for free student membership of the Institute of Hospitality. Thanks to the University’s recent decision to join the Institute’s Education Membership Scheme, their students will benefit from the resources and career benefits offered by the industry’s professional body.

Maria Gebbels, Ph.D. MSc MIH, Lecturer in Hospitality Management says:

“The University of Greenwich is proud to have joined the Institute of Hospitality’s Education Membership Scheme (EMS). This free for students membership will give them access to valuable industry resources and contribute toward their academic and professional journey. At Greenwich, we are devoted to helping students move into high-quality, graduate-level jobs, which will be further enhanced through the EMS by bringing students into contact with hospitality industry professionals through the mentoring scheme and networking events.”

The scheme has been operating for many years and is an excellent example of how the Institute is supporting entrants to the industry. The University of Greenwich is a British university with campuses in south-east London and north Kent. These include the Greenwich Campus, located in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College (see photo) in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London. It is the largest university in London by student numbers and the greenest in the UK as assessed by the People & Planet Green League Table.

 

Southern Branch celebrates student achievements

Three students received the accolade of “Student of the Year” at The Institute of Hospitality Southern Branch’s Student Awards Gala Evening at the exclusive Lainston House Hotel, near Winchester on 2nd May.

Over ninety people attended the event, which was hosted by the celebrity chef, Steven Edwards, and featured the top college students from Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire who competed for prizes in the Chef, Pastry Chef and Front of House categories.

  • The Chefs’ Forum Award for Chef Student of the Year went to Reegan Graff from Kingston Maurward College.
  • The Yate Supplies Pastry Chef Student of the Year was won by Jessica Edwards from Bournemouth & Poole College.
  • The AA Front of House Student of the Year was Carmen Darmanin from Eastleigh College.

The evening  included a sumptuous three course meal prepared by the chefs at Lainston House using meat provided by the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB), organic fruit and vegetables from Sunnyfields and wine from Nyetimber and Bancroft.   Further sponsorship was received from the Institute of Hospitality and  Halton Foodservice.

“The competition was very close; the judges had a very difficult time choosing the winners.  It was a spectacular evening – there was a real buzz going around the room the whole night; and when the winners were announced it was electrifying!”, explained Tom Goss MIH from the IoH Southern Branch.  “We are thrilled with the high level of support that we have received from the industry and the colleges”.

In addition to Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester, Bournemouth & Poole College and Eastleigh College, entrants came from Brockenhurst College, Highbury College, South Downs College and Basingstoke College of Technology.
